The Stroop effect is one of the most famous findings in experimental psychology. It describes the slowdown and the extra errors that appear when two pieces of information in the same stimulus contradict each other. In the classic demonstration, you are shown the name of a color — for example the word BLUE — but the word is printed in red ink. When you are asked to say the ink color out loud, your answer comes out slower and less accurately than it would if the word and the ink matched.
The effect was described in detail by the American psychologist John Ridley Stroop in 1935, and it has been replicated thousands of times since then. The explanation is straightforward: for a fluent reader, reading is automatic. Your brain extracts the meaning of the word whether you want it to or not. Naming an ink color, by contrast, is a controlled process that requires attention. When the automatic process and the controlled process point to different answers, they compete, and resolving that competition costs time. That measurable cost is the Stroop effect.
Because the task is so simple and the effect is so reliable, the Stroop test has become a standard demonstration in psychology classes and a widely used research tool for studying attention and cognitive control.
This online Stroop test follows the traditional color-word format. On each question you see a single color word displayed in the center of the screen. Your job is to select the color of the ink the word is printed in — not the color the word spells. You answer by tapping or clicking a color button. Easy and standard modes use RED, BLUE, GREEN, and YELLOW; challenge mode adds PURPLE and ORANGE.
Half of the questions are matching trials, in which the word and the ink color agree, such as the word RED printed in red ink. The other half are conflicting trials, in which the word and the ink disagree, such as the word RED printed in blue ink. Matching and conflicting questions are shuffled together in a random order that changes every time you take the test, so you cannot memorize a sequence.
Each question stays on screen for a maximum of ten seconds. If you do not answer in time, the test moves on automatically and that question is counted as incorrect. A brief visual mark confirms each response before the next randomized item appears. Choose 12, 24, or 72 questions based on how long you want the session to last.

For example, if you averaged 590 ms on matching trials and 718 ms on conflicting trials, your Stroop interference would be +128 ms. That gap is the signature of the Stroop effect: it estimates how much extra time your brain needed to override the automatic reading response. Only correct answers feed into the reaction-time averages, since the time spent on an incorrect answer is not a clean measurement of processing speed.
The Stroop paradigm shows up in more places than you might expect. Psychology students meet it in their first research-methods course because it is easy to run and produces a clear, robust effect. Reaction times measured on phones, tablets, and computers include small delays from the screen, the touch sensor or mouse, and the browser itself, and those delays vary from device to device. Your score also reflects how alert, caffeinated, or distracted you happen to be at that moment.
For those reasons you should not compare your numbers directly with published clinical norms, and you should not read medical meaning into a single result.
