Reading becomes highly automatic with practice. An experienced reader does not normally inspect each letter and decide whether to recognize the word; its meaning seems to appear immediately. Color naming is less automatic, especially when another familiar signal is competing for attention.

The harder trials therefore recruit several control processes at once. Selective attention keeps the ink color relevant. Response inhibition helps suppress the answer prompted by the written word. Working memory holds the instruction in place from one trial to the next. Together, these processes help you act on the information that matters while ignoring a strong distraction.
